Novigrad

Novigrad travel guide: how to get there and where to stay, what to see and where to sunbathe. The most interesting things to do in Novigrad: places to see, special attractions and beaches.

Novigrad, a small fishing town, is located on the west coast of Istria, 5 km from Umag and 16 km from Poreč. There are narrow streets, old buildings and a beautiful church. Modern tourist infrastructure is quite successfully superimposed on all this medievalness, which is ideal for a relaxing holiday. An undoubted advantage of the place is its gentle, unspoilt pebble beaches, which are rare in the region.

The main annual event in Novigrad is the biggest fish festival in Europe, which takes place in August. The Heineken Jazz Festival is also held in August.

How to get there

There is no problem in getting to Novigrad. Pula International Airport is 65 km away, and from the airport you can take a taxi, which is very well developed in Croatia, or take an intercity bus. Of course, one can also rent a car: the roads in Croatia are good and the traffic is usually quiet.

Hotels and Restaurants

Despite its medieval flavor, the city has a well-developed infrastructure: hotels, apartments, restaurants and places of entertainment in Novigrad can cater for three times the number of tourists as the city's inhabitants. The hotels are friendly (as they are all over Croatia) and well-coordinated, so all guests find comfort and relaxation. A very popular hotel, located 1 km away from the city, is Maestral 3*. It is located 200 metres from the coastline, has its own pebble beach and offers an extensive range of services not only for leisure and sports, but also for business: restaurant, tavern, conference room, outdoor pool, indoor pool with heated sea water, beauty salon, gym, gift shop, 17 tennis courts with different surfaces, mini golf and mini football fields. In general, it has everything you need for a comfortable holiday and if Croatia were not such an amazingly interesting country, you would not have to go outside the hotel at all. But Croatia is interesting in every way, not only from a natural and architectural-historical point of view.

Entertainment and attractions in Novigrad

It's a small town with crooked streets, but these old bricks hold a lot of charm. Oh, how many intersting places there are to be seen in this city! Old Gothic-Romanesque buildings, baroque churches, and tumbledown old city walls bring back memories of times long gone. Of interest is the crypt under the altar of the parish church of St. Pelagia and St. Maximius. Here one can see a collection of liturgical items and artifacts that made the lapidaries of Novigrad famous. The three-nave basilica, built in the 5th and 6th century during the establishment of the Novigrad diocese, and its decor (or rather, the remains of the decoration) have a lot to tell those who are interested in European history. The modern neo-classical facade of the basilica was created in 1935, and perhaps, through its appearance, the descendants will in the future learn about the architectural trends of the 20th century.

In the meantime, you can enjoy the choral singing during services in the basilica: the acoustics are very good and make the voices of the singers deep and vivid.

A simple walk through the medieval streets of Novigrad will be a delight: the air is saturated with sea breeze, and the plants are unusually beautiful, thanks to the mild Mediterranean climate. Novigrad is also famous for its very beautiful long promenade - a must for the resort life. In addition, there are a few sandy beaches in the vicinity of Novigrad, which is a rarity in Croatia.

Events to Attend

A number of festivals are held in the country during the holiday season. Some of them are based in Novigrad. Two of them are well known not only to tourists but also to music lovers - the Jazz Festival, held annually here under the auspices of the Heineken Group, and the Ethno Folk Festival dedicated to the town's patron saint Pelagus. Both of these events are held in August, which can make it difficult to book a hotel there and one needs to do so well in advance. June also sees some accommodation pressure due to the Transadriatica regatta in Venice. However, it is also a time when you are more likely to bump into a celebrity who has come to participate, cheer, or just to admire the beautiful yachts.
